Leading Asian independent label Rock Records has renewed and expanded its exclusive sales and distribution agreement with Universal Music in a deal which will see Taiwan-based Rock’s catalog handled by Universal in mainland China.
The four-year deal adds China to the list of countries covered by the deal which was initially struck in July 2003: Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore. Until now, Rock distributed its own catalog in China. The new agreement covers back catalog, forthcoming releases and joint-venture initiatives.
Launched in 1994, Rock claims to have the most extensive catalog of Mandarin-language hits in Asia, with leading acts from Taiwan and Hong Kong, including Super Band, Genie Chuo, MC Hot Dog and Wakin Chau.
Universal Music Asia Pacific Region president/executive VP Universal Music Group International (UMGI) Max Hole said in a statement: “Our first agreement with the company has proved to be successful and productive for both sides. We’re delighted to continue in business together, and to have Mainland China as part of this latest deal.”
Rock Records CEO Sam Duann added: “Rock Records has always had an international approach for our distribution and marketing strategies, and our alliance with Universal Music since 2003 has certainly built this further. Together with UMGI, I am very confident that Rock Records will continue strengthening its dominance in Asia.”
Duann and his brother Johnny established Rock Records’ parent company Rock Music Group (RMG) in 1976. RMG employs some 440 employees around the world and operates a string of imprints, including Rock, Magic Stone, Synco Culture, Galaxie, Guts and Twister.
