Universal Music Group is releasing internationally this week its first two titles on the Universal Media Disc format. The two UMD titles are 50 Cent’s “The Massacre – Special Edition” and Scissor Sisters’ “We Are Scissor Sisters And So Are You.”
In the coming weeks, UMG plans to release an additional eight titles before Christmas, followed by a further four early next year. It will include new titles from Eminem, Jack Johnson, Snoop Dogg, Prince, The Police, Bob Marley, Audioslave and Limp Bizkit.
Universal Music Group International says that non-Anglo-American repertoire titles will also be issued in due time.
The Universal Media Disc is a versatile media format, combining audio and video in an interactive environment. It can be played on Sony’s PlayStation Portable system. According to industry estimates, international sales of PSPs are set to reach 17 million units by second quarter 2006.
London-based UMGI VP Olivier Robert-Murphy, says the format has the potential to become a significant new revenue stream for Universal Music. “UMD offer a mix of high quality sound and vision, ultimate portability and sleek design, which compliments young and vibrant lifestyles,” he says. “It fits the needs and tastes of today’s younger generation: it empowers the user, enabling them to watch and listen to their favourite bands when, where and how they wish.”
Robert-Murphy adds, “PSP and UMD are just what we have been looking for and represent a sound platform for us to grow our international video business.”
