Universal Music Group has signed a merchandising deal with Modu Mobile, a maker of mobile phone devices set to debut later this year.
Modu makes mini mobile phones that fit into different jackets, also made by the company. The interchangeable jackets will come in different designs and can include preloaded content and music subscriptions.
Modu and Universal will create jackets developed around top UMG artists with preloaded content. The jackets are expected to be available to consumers by the end of the year.
Rob Wells, senior VP of digital for Universal Music Group International, said modu’s “revolutionary platform has opened up mobile phones to new music products and services that simply didn’t exist before modu came along. UMG takes the mobile channel seriously, and our strategic partnership with modu reflects the potential we see in this dynamic and exciting market.”
