Ultra Music Festival Extending Global Reach to Asia, Australia
This year the event will be held in conjunction with the Winter Music Conference (WMC). Last year’s festival was the first in 11 years Ultra was held apart from the WMC, an event that features networking and business as well as music. In previous years, the UMF had been held as a wrap-up to the WMC with both events occurring in Miami in the same week. In 2011 the events separated, with the UMF being held two weeks after its former partner.
Billboard reported last year that event organizers had a longstanding agreement to run the events concurrently. Co-founder of the WMC Bill Kelly was quoted as saying that, “[The Ultra Music Festiva] broke away from the agreement last minute.”
This year, the UMF and WMC set aside their differences and reconnected, just as the WMC is undergoing a major expansion: the confab will now take place over two consecutive weekends, March 16-25th, in Miami at The Beachplex.
UMF started as a one-day event held after the WMC in 1999. Gradually it grew in size with notable live acts.
