U.K. folk and blues songwriter John Martyn has died at the age of 60, according to a statement on his official Web site. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
The artist received an Order of the British Empire at this month’s New Year’s Honors, and was given a lifetime achievement award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in February 2008. The honor was presented by Phil Collins, one of Martyn’s previous collaborators. He also worked with Eric Clapton, David Gilmour and his former wife, Beverley Martyn.

Martyn, who was born in Surrey but spent his early childhood in Glasgow, released his debut 1967 album, “London Conversation,” on Island Records. Island released a boxed set, “Ain’t No Saint,” to mark his 60th birthday in September.
Martyn had been due to perform in Scotland as a headliner at the Fifestock event over three nights in March. “John was very much looking forward to playing Fifestock and will be sadly missed,” said a statement from the organizers.
