The U.K. is on track to set a new singles sales record in 2013 as a third release of the year is nearing the milestone of a million copies sold, according to the Official Charts Company.
Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” feat. TI and Pharrell Williams and Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” feat. Nile Rodgers are the biggest-selling singles in Britain as of the end of the third quarter, it said Thursday.
“Blurred Lines” has sold more than 1.36 million copies in Britain, according to the firm that tracks sales. “Get Lucky, in which Pharrell also had a hand, has reached sales of 1.24 million copies.
Avicii’s “Wake Me” Up is the fastest-selling single of 2013 and already ranks third for the year with 980,000 copies sold to-date. It is expected that the song will join the million sellers club before the end of the week, according to the Official Charts Company. It will only be the 140th track in British history to reach that milestone.
“I’m humbled by all of the love the U.K. fans have shown,” Pharrell told the Official Charts Company’s blog. “But, when you are working with incredible talent like The Robots and Robin, great things are bound to happen!”
Led by Gotye featuring Kimbra’s “Somebody That I Used To Know,” 2012 was the biggest year on record for singles sales in the U.K. Total singles sales increased by 6 percent to 188.6 million, with digital sales accounting for 99.6 percent of that.
