Fans of Latin American electronic music may not recognize Uji‘s new moniker, but they’re likely no strangers to his music.
Hailing from Buenos Aires, Argentina, the producer and multi-instrumentalist — born Luis Maurette — previously toured the world and released five albums as one-half of popular folkloric duo Lulacruza.
“Jenga” is both the first single off Maurette’s forthcoming solo debut Alborada, set for release on ZZK Records in June, and one of the first tracks he made under his new Uji alias. Combining traditional percussion with carefully layered pads and vocal chants, the four-minute outing evokes elements of ancient tradition while retaining a fresh feel.
“’Jenga’ is about losing oneself,” explains Maurette. “It’s about stripping away layers to find our innermost essence, our pre-verbal conscience, our internal flame. It’s about reigniting a memory in us that is so ancient that it goes way back in time, past generations into the roots of our ancestry. I often play this track first in my sets because I feel like it opens up a portal to an elevated state of dance.”
