U2’s “How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb” exploded onto the U.K. album chart at No. 1 yesterday (Nov. 28). The new Universal Island album is the Irish band’s ninth best-selling set over a 21-year period that began when “War” hit the top in 1983.
“Dismantle” displaced Eminem’s “Encore” (Interscope), which fell to No. 2 after two consecutive weeks at No. 1. Robbie Williams’ “Greatest Hits” (Chrysalis) dropped one to No. 3.
Behind U2, Kylie Minogue had the next highest new entry with “Ultimate Kylie” (Parlophone) at No. 4. There was also a somewhat modest No. 14 start for Gwen Stefani’s “Love Angel Music Baby” (Interscope). Australian star Delta Goodrem bowed at No. 25 with “Mistaken Identity” (Epic), while U.S. rapper Snoop Dogg’s “R&G-The Masterpiece” (Geffen) opened at No. 33.
On the U.K. singles chart, Girls Aloud’s cover of the Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand By You” (Polydor) held fast at No. 1 for a second week. The highest new entry on the singles chart was “Ride It” (Innocent/Virgin) by former Spice Girl Geri Hailliwell, credited on the disc simply as Geri.
“Tilt Ya Head Back” (Universal Island) by Nelly featuring Christina Aguilera entered at No. 5, followed by and former Westlife member Brian McFadden’s “Irish Son” (Sony Music) at No. 6. The latter raised controversy last week when Dublin’s St. Fintian’s High School complained about being identified in the supporting video clip. McFadden claims in the song’s lyric that he was beaten at school, although he never attended the establishment depicted.
Shania Twain’s “Party for Two” featuring Mark McGrath (Mercury) debuted at No. 10, giving Twain’s her ninth U.K. top 10 hit.
Further down the listings, two stalwart rock acts returned to the charts: Status Quo and Thunder. Status Quo entered the tally at No. 21 with “Thinking Of You” (UMTV), the band’s 53rd British top 40 single since first charting in 1968. Thunder, which notched 16 top 40 entries between 1990 and 1998, debuted at No. 27 with “I Love You More Than Rock ‘n’ Roll” (STC).
Tallying chart activity across Europe, Eminem’s “Encore” (Interscope) ascends to No. 1 on European Top 100 Albums list, while Destiny’s Child’s “Lose My Breath” (Columbia) climbs 3-1 on the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles chart.
