TWICE Make History as First K-Pop Girl Group to Hold Japanese Dome Tour

TWICE made history this week with the first two stops of their 2019 Japanese dome tour, the first ever held by a K-pop girl group.

Kicking off their #Dreamday tour in Osaka at the Kyocera Dome, which holds 55,000 people, on Wednesday (March 20) and following it up on Thursday (March 21) with a second show, the nine members of TWICE performed in front of a sold-out crowd both nights.

The pair of shows will be followed by two at the Tokyo Dome at the end of the month, and a show at the Nagoya Dome on April 6.

Since KARA became the first K-pop girl group to hold a show at the Tokyo Dome in 2013, several other female K-pop teams performed at Japanese domes, but TWICE is the first to be able to hold a multi-city dome tour in Japan. The group’s label JYP Entertainment previously told Billboard that tickets for the five concerts across three cities sold out in one minute, with 210,000 people set to attend the shows.

TWICE has seen hit after hit throughout Asia, and JYP has regularly cited the multi-national girl group — which features members from South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan — as the key to its success in recent years. Since their debut in 2015 with breakout hit “Like Ooh-Ahh,” TWICE has landed eight albums in the Top 10 of the World Albums chart, and have proven particularly popular in Japan: on the Japan Hot 100, they’ve seen eight Top 10 hits, and 18 songs rank overall.
