The multinational girl group TWICE covered Jackson 5‘s “I Want You Back” for the Japanese teen rom-com Sensei Kunshu, opening in domestic theaters this summer.
The cover will be the girls’ first foray into film soundtracks, and the new trailer features the modern, vibrant reinterpretation of the classic Motown number that matches the upbeat tone of the upcoming film.
TWICE released a comment noting that although they felt pressure covering such a famous number, they enjoyed mixing their signature pop style into the reboot. “When we first heard that it would be a cover of a classic song, we were worried that we might not be able to do it justice,” the group commented. “But we sang our version of ‘I Want You Back’ hoping that our song adds more fun and cheer to the movie Sensei Kunshu.”
The movie is a live-action adaptation of the popular comic by Momoko Koda about a handsome and intelligent but coldly cynical high school math teacher played by rising actor Ryoma Takeuchi and a student who has a major crush on him played by Minami Hamabe. The film is directed by Sho Tsukikawa of such recent blockbusters as Let Me Eat Your Pancreas and My Little Monster.
TWICE recently released their third Japanese single, “Wake Me Up,” which has sold more than 500,000 copies to date.
