As Brooklyn indie rockers TV on the Radio gear up for the release of their next album, “Nine Types of Light,” the group has revealed that bassist-keyboardist Gerard Smith is currently battling lung cancer.
In a message on its official website, the band disclosed that Smith has been “undergoing treatment and will be unable to participate in the upcoming tour.”
“Gerard is fortunate enough to have health insurance and is receiving excellent medical care,” the statement reads. “Already we have seen dramatic results. Combine that with Gerard’s legendarily willful disposition and it might just be cancer that has the problem. We appreciate your concern and support for Gerard and his family.”
“Nine Types of Light,” TVOTR’s follow-up to 2008’s “Dear Science,” is scheduled for an April 12 release on Interscope records, and the band has offered the track “Caffeinated Consciousness” as a free download. After heading to Austin for a few SXSW showcases this week, the band will kick off a spring U.S. tour in Philadelphia on Apr. 8.
