Tumblr’s weekly Fandometrics charts saw a big change this week: The social media platform has now incorporated Korean artists into their general music list due to K-pop’s immense popularity on the site.
The Fandometrics music chart for the week of April 23 is the first to be expanded to include K-pop, which also has its own distinct Fandometrics chart. This week showed that BTS, Beyoncé, Harry Styles, EXO and Ariana Grande were the five most popular musicians, in that order, on the site over the past week.
A total of 19 Korean acts, beginning with BTS at No. 1 and ending with SHINee’s Jonghyun at No. 40, appeared on the chart. (SM Entertainment’s NCT team appeared in four spots, with distinct subunits NCT 127, NCT U, NCT 2018 and NCT Dream listed.)
Tumblr’s weekly Fandometrics charts track the most popular entertainment entities on Tumblr, according to an explainer on the site. The company’s content team puts together a variety of lists based on how many interactions there are with any given tag each week. The goal is to present an “accurate picture of each fandom’s influences across Tumblr.”
The K-pop ranking was first featured in Tumblr’s weekly metrics list in May 2017. It followed K-pop’s inclusion in the site’s year-end lists, which similarly ranked interactions on the site. Korean music and its artists have a sizable presence on social media, and Billboard‘s Social 50 chart reflects this, with K-pop acts regularly appearing in the top ranks; BTS has appeared on it during a total of 79 non-consecutive weeks, many at No. 1.
Tumblr plans to continue releasing a separate K-pop-oriented Fandometrics chart each week.
