Following the sudden death of 21-year-old Juice WRLD, a number of “emo rap” artists are swearing off drugs.
Trippie Redd is the latest, taking to Instagram Live to announce his new lifestyle. We ain’t doin’ it no more,” he explained. “Period. If it ain’t weed, we ain’t doin’ it no more. And when I say ‘we,’ I mean us as a group. Us as a whole, the whole emo music artists. No drugs.”
“It’s not cool,” he added, according to HotNewHipHop. “We look up to all these bigger artists, all these grown-ass men and all they do is talk about poppin’ pills and sippin’ codeine and all that shit… It’s music. N—as know what they get theyself into but at the same time, it’s like, we gotta be the strongest people to be like, ‘Okay, n—as is just using this for rhymes at this point.’ Let it just be that, you feel me? I’ll be the first to say: I ain’t sippin’ no lean, I ain’t poppin’ no pills but I’mma still talk about it in music. Maybe.”
Though the cause of death has yet to be confirmed, Juice died on Sunday (Dec. 8) after suffering a seizure at Chicago’s Midway International Airport. He was reportedly administered Narcan after the rapper’s girlfriend said he had been taking Percocet, an opioid painkiller.
Trippie and Juice were good friends, having collaborated various times on songs like 1400 / 999 Freestyle” and “6 Kiss.” After hearing the bad news, Trippie took to Instagram to share his grief.
“I kinda hate life tbh I’m so sick and tired of this shit honestly…..,” he wrote alongside a poignantly sweet photo of the duo being silly on FaceTime.
