Reznor and Ross are a winning team. They took out an Oscar for their original soundtrack to David Fincher’s The Social Network, and they’ve worked on a string of acclaimed films, including Gone Girl and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (both winning Grammys), Jonah Hill’s Mid90s and Netflix horror Bird Box.
Jon Batiste, bandleader for The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, will create original jazz music for the movie, details of which were revealed during the D23 Expo presentation in Anaheim.
Directed by Pete Docter (Up, Inside Out), the film follows Joe, a middle-school band teacher played by Jamie Foxx, who loves to play jazz and dreams of performing at New York’s “Half Note” club. Our hero gets his break, but an accident causes his soul to be separated from his body and transported to the “You Seminar.” Some soul-searching ensues.
The cast, including Tina Fey, Questlove, Phylicia Rashad, and Hamilton’s Daveed Diggs joined Docter onstage at the Expo, along with co-director/writer Kemp Powers, writer Mike Jones and producer Dana Murray, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Soul is slated for release June 19, 2020.
