As the global coronavirus pandemic continues to keep people sheltering at home, Tove Lo is making use of the time by doing some good for animals.
The Swedish singer and her dog Elliotte are teaming up with PETA U.K. in a new campaign urging people to “Adopt, Don’t Shop,” and Billboard has the first look at the new ad.
“Elliotte and I have a special bond. My parents and I rescued him from the streets of Spain 10 years ago, and it was one of the best decisions of our lives,” the “I’m Coming” singer tells Billboard. “He went from being scared of everyone and everything to the most cuddly little dog in just a few weeks. It was amazing to see that transformation!”
According to PETA, more than six million dogs and cats wind up in shelters each year, and about half of them are euthanized. For that reason, the singer wants people who are thinking of adding a furry family member to go to their local rescue groups and city shelters.
“If you have the time, patience and resources to provide an animal with a loving home, remember always to adopt — don’t shop!” the vegetarian says. “And please support local shelters — they need our help now more than ever.”
With the current health crisis, many shelters are closed to the public to help reduce the spread of the virus, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters and more to adopt. Many rescue organizations and shelters have brought their adoption processes online, offering virtual meet-and-greets and signing contracts digitally while the animals are cared for in foster homes.
Tove Lo isn’t the only one lending her voice to support animals during the pandemic. Recently, Sir Paul McCartney teamed up with PETA to make his birthday wish known — to get more people to give up eating meat and join him in being a vegetarian.
