Tori Kelly stopped by Kelly Clarkson’s new talk show, where the two reminisced on the “I Was Made For Loving You” singer’s not-so-well-known time on American Idol.
Kelly auditioned for season nine when she was just 16 years old, and was told by Simon Cowell that her voice was “almost annoying.” She got a “yes” from the other three judges and ultimately made it into the next round, but Cowell’s comment was shocking to Clarkson, who told Kelly she is “one of the greatest vocalists.”
“I never knew you were on Idol and I never knew that Simon was like, ‘Eh, you’re annoying.’ I was like, ‘What?’” she said.
“I think that was like 10 years ago now, so it’s funny that people are still finding that audition but it was the most amazing experience,” Kelly replied. “I don’t regret anything and I think Simon is cool. No hard feelings. I actually should thank him because it all happened for a reason.”
The duo then discussed Kelly’s recent album, Inspired By True Events, and the “true events” that went into making the record. “It was kind of crazy season for me in my personal life,” she explained. “A lot of brokenness within my family. My grandfather actually passed away and on top of all that, on a much happier note, I got married too. It was a lot in the span of a couple years. I didn’t know any better way to express those emotions than to put it in my year.”
“I think it brought out a new style of songwriting for me,” she continued. “Looking back, I think I’m going to be like, ‘Oh, that’s my growing up album.’”
