NBC’s nostalgic family drama “American Dreams” will continue its tradition of casting pop stars as 1960s artists in the show’s second season. Already lined up to appear in upcoming episodes are R&B stars Monica and Alicia Keys and inaugural “American Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson.
Also signed for the series’ sophomore season are “Lizzie McGuire” star/recording artist Hilary Duff and her sister Haylie Duff. None of the roles the artists will play have been revealed.
“‘American Dreams’ has made a dramatic impact by combining the past musical scene with the present,” NBC president Jeff Zucker said in a statement. “We are thrilled with the mutually beneficial relationship that allows us to showcase musical stars such as Kelly Clarkson who relate to a contemporary audience.”
The hit show is set in Philadelphia, where one of the teenage characters is a regular dancer on “American Bandstand.” The show incorporates vintage footage of the Dick Clark-hosted series, as well as recreating performances by pop stars of day.
The bumper crop of young music stars who were seen in the show’s first season included Destiny’s Child’s Kelly Rowland as Martha Reeves, Michelle Branch playing Lesley Gore and Usher performing as Marvin Gaye. Others who guest-starred were the Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter (as Jay of Jay and the Americans), India.Arie (Nina Simone), Vivian Green (Brenda Holloway), Vanessa Carlton (Dusty Springfield), Duncan Sheik (Bobby Darin), B2K and Marques Houston (Temptations) and Stacie Orrico (as a member of the Angels).
The show earned three soundtrack.
