Tony Lucca returned to “The Voice” last week to perform “Never Gonna Let You Go,” his latest single since last year’s successful rendition of “Yesterday.” The singer, who placed as second runner up in the competition’s second season was thrilled to return to the stage where he made his first impression on a mainstream audience. “It was exhilarating to be back,” Lucca said.
Lucca is preparing for the release of a six-song EP, due out July 16, which he and his band recorded in preparation for his next full-length studio album. The EP will star “Never Gonna Let You Go”, an upbeat, infectious love song with an equally bubbly video that debuts today on Billboard.com. Lucca mentioned that not everything on the EP will be similar to this first single.
“If you put this single on one end of the spectrum and something a bit more urban at the other end, and fill in all the spaces in between, that’s what we managed to accomplish with this EP.” Lucca said.
This EP is Lucca’s first work on 222 Records, owned by “Voice” coach and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine. Lucca has been recording since 1997, and signing to a major label has been a huge change for the star, whose greatest claim to fame formerly lay in his childhood gig as a Mousketeer.
“It opened a lot of doors that being a staple of the indie world no longer could,” Lucca said. “It’s an entirely new landscape, really.”
When asked about his newfound mainstream success, Lucca expressed incredible gratitude. “I’m grateful for it, and it’s a really wonderful opportunity. And I think I’m ready for it more than I even realize. I feel like I’ve earned it and that is a tremendous feeling in and of itself.”
On July 29 Lucca is taking off on his “Whole World Watching Tour,” which will take him across the Midwest and East Coast, wrapping up in mid-August in Pittsburgh. In September Lucca will be performing alongside Levine’s Maroon 5 and Kelly Clarkson.
