These days, Gen Z is pretty darn active politically. They’re one giant post-gender, climate-aware voting block waiting to explode, or at leas that’s the way they’re painted online. They also happen to love Marshmello, Blackbear and Yungblud, so when the three entertainers came together in the studio, they decided to tap into this “enough is enough” angsty energy.
The result is “Tongue Tied,” an upbeat, pop punk sing-along full of tweenage agony. Yungblud’s tight-throat emo pitch takes the lion’s share of the feature, while Blackbear comes in with his smoky-lung R&B style for the second verse. The video is highly cinematic, directed by Christian Breslauer with a starring role by Emmy nominee Joey Kingdepicting.
We’re dropped into a dystopian society in which kids are silenced by militarized adults. We’re not sure what the fight started over, other than like, freaking everything, mom, geez. It’s a tough battle, but all three heroes make it out alive. Rebel rousers rise again, and progress can’t be stopped, okay Boomer?
“Tongue Tied” is out now on Marshmello’s Joytime Collective and Geffen Records. It marks the first time Marshmello, Yungblud and Blackbear have collaborated.
