As a barrage of musicians voiced their opinions on Tuesday night’s presidential debate, Tokimonsta delivered her own assessment of the debate segment regarding President Trump’s proposed overturn of the Affordable Care Act.
“If there was no Affordable Care Act, I probably wouldn’t be alive today,” the Los Angeles-based producer wrote on Twitter. “Prior to the ACA, I couldn’t have adequate health coverage bc I had a pre-existing condition (migraines). There would be no way for me to pay the millions of $$ necessary for my complicated brain surgery.”
In 2016, the producer born Jennifer Lee had brain surgery to treat moyamoya, a rare disease caused by blocked arteries at the base of the brain. During her recovery from this surgery, Lee was temporarily unable to walk, speak and make or even comprehend music. In the wake of this surgery, she released her album Lune Rouge, which received a 2019 Grammy nomination for best dance/electronic album.
“So, Trump signed a bill saying he would protect pre-existing conditions,” she continued on Twitter. “All it really is, is a statement that he wants one or more of his depts to come up w a plan. He doesn’t give any guidance or the vaguest outline of what that plan should be….
“I’ll need full coverage healthcare for the rest of my life. Moyamoya has no cure, neither does many of the other illnesses American’s have or will have. Trump doesn’t have a solid plan for people like us. I was treated by the doc of my choice, we should have that right.”
“Publicly, I’ve always stayed clear of politics while focusing on human issues—like equal rights regardless of race, gender, orientation, socio-economic status,” the producer tells Billboard. “However, Trump offers no clear plan for people like me who were barred from medical coverage prior to Obamacare due to a pre-existing condition. He is threatening the health of Americans like me with illnesses and those who will become ill in the future.”
This Friday, Tokimonsta will perform as part of Rave the Vote, an ongoing voter registration initiative aimed at raising voter turnout in the dance music community and beyond. Other performers include Soul Clap, A-Trak, Jubilee and more. See the complete lineup below.
