TobyMac unveiled a somber tribute song in memory of his late son Truett Mckeehan titled “21 Years” on Friday (Jan. 10).
On the poignant track, the Christian rapper opens up about the loss of his oldest child in heartbreaking detail, questioning God before addressing Truett directly. “Why would you give and then take him away?/ Suddenly end, could you not let it fade?/ What I would give for a couple o’ days/ A couple o’ days/ Is it just across the Jordan or a city in the stars?/ Are you singing with the angels? Are you happy where you are?/ Well until this show is over and you’ve run into my arms/ God has you in heaven, but I have you in my heart,” tobyMac sing-raps on the vulnerable chorus.
The day before the song dropped, the grieving artist took to Twitter to thank his fans and talk about writing the song. “The last couple of months have been the hardest I’ve ever faced,” he tweeted. “Thank you for the love and support. Part of my process has always been to write about the things I’m going through, but this went to a whole new level. What started out as getting some of my thoughts and feelings about losing my firstborn son down on paper, ended up a song. ’21 Years’ is a song I never wanted to write. I hope it’s for someone out there, or maybe it’s just for me.”
Tragically, the 21-year-old musician passed away suddenly at the Mckeehan family’s Tennessee home last October, just one week after his first solo show, which his father proudly attended.
