With seven nominations, Toby Keith leads the field for the 37th annual Country Music Association (CMA) Awards. Brooks & Dunn, Brad Paisley and veteran artist Johnny Cash follow with four nominations each.
Keith is up for entertainer and male vocalist of the year, album of the year for his DreamWorks set “Unleashed,” and song, single, music video and vocal event of the year for his duet with Willie Nelson, “Beer for My Horses.” In the single and album categories, Keith is also nominated as co-producer.
Cash’s version of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” netted him nominations in the single and music video categories. The set from which it comes, “American IV: The Man Comes Around” (American/Columbia), is up for album of the year, marking the first time Cash has been included in that field since a 1970 nod for “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.”
Cash is also nominated in the vocal event category for “Tears in the Holston River” with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. The aging artist is expected to be in New York Thursday (Aug. 28) for the MTV Video Music Awards, where “Hurt” is nominated for six honors, including video of the year and best male video.
Brooks & Dunn will vie for awards in the entertainer and vocal duo of the year categories, while the title track of their latest Arista Nashville album, “Red Dirt Road,” is up for song and music video of the year. Along with a male vocalist of the year nod, Paisley’s “Celebrity” is up for single, song and music video awards.
Other artists with multiple nominations are Alan Jackson, Tim McGraw, Nelson and Darryl Worley with three and Kenny Chesney, Dixie Chicks, Martina McBride, Montgomery Gentry, Joe Nichols and Blake Shelton with two.
George Strait has one nomination in the male vocalist of the year category, but even if he doesn’t win, he can still celebrate a career milestone. The mention extends a record for the artist, giving him his 71st CMA Awards nomination.
Vince Gill will host the awards for the 12th consecutive year. The Nov. 5 event will be broadcast live from Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House on CBS. Winners will be determined through ballots cast by the 5,000 professional members of the Country Music Association.
