Rob Thomas and Rufus Wainwright will contribute original songs to the soundtrack of the animated Walt Disney film “Meet the Robinsons.” Scheduled to open March 30, 2007, in U.S. theaters, the film will also feature a score composed by Danny Elfman.
Wainwright composed two songs for the computer-animated release, which is based on William Joyce’s “A Day With Wilbur Robinson.” According to a spokesperson for the artist, Wainwright performs the first, “Motion Waltz,” while the other, “Where Is Your Heart At” is sung by Jamie Cullum. Details of Thomas’ participation were unavailable at deadline, and with the film’s release nearly a year off, the soundtrack could certainly change by the time it arrives in theaters.
The film chronicles the adventures of a 12-year-old genius inventor who travels into the future with the book’s title character in search of a rival who has stolen his latest invention. Angela Bassett, Kelly Ripa, Tom Selleck, Harland Williams and Adam West are among those lending their voice talents to the film, a trailer for which can be found at summer tour with Atlantic labelmate Jewel. The trek in support of the matchbox twenty frontman’s solo debut, “…Something To Be,” opens May 23 in Clearwater, Fla.
Wainwright, who’s last studio set was 2004’s “Want Two” (Geffen), has contributed to recent releases from Elton John, Teddy Thompson and Burt Bacharach, as well as the soundtracks to “Brokeback Mountain” and “The Aviator,” in which he had a small role. He has scattered shows on his schedule, including a June 14-15 engagement at New York’s Carnegie Hall where he will recreate Judy Garland’s acclaimed 1961 concert album, “Judy at Carnegie,” backed by a 40-piece orchestra.
