1999 – Joe Thomas, co-producer of Brian Wilson’s 1998 album “Imagination,” countersues Melinda Wilson, the musician’s wife and conservator. The suit claims that Melinda Wilson “schemed against and… manipulated both Brian and Joe, and misused [the joint venture] in order to secure the full benefit of Brian’s star-status for herself.”
1998 – Garth Brooks’ mother undergoes 12 hours of surgery to remove a cancerous growth in her throat. Colleen Brooks had not been able to eat solid food for several years because of her condition. The surgery is performed at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. All the cancer is successfully removed, and Ms. Brooks’ first request upon hearing the news is for pizza or a cheeseburger.
1998 – Barbra Streisand gets down on her knees beside James Brolin to help draw the cover from her new husband’s new star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
1998 – It is announced that Billy Joel has postponed the fall leg of his current world tour due to recurring throat problems.
1997 – Steven Seagal kicks off a North American music tour to promote his newest film “Fire Down Below.” The tour, with dates in Nashville, Dallas, New Orleans, Chicago, Toronto, New York, and San Antonio, marks the actor’s official stage debut as a band headliner. Seagal plays guitar and sings.
1996 – Smashing Pumpkins begin a long awaited tour. The tour was supposed to start a few weeks earlier, but had to be delayed due to some much needed rehearsal time for Filter drummer Matt Walker and Frogs’ drummer Dennis Flemion. The two borrowed musicians are needed to replace Jonathan Melvoin and Jimmy Chamberlin. Melvoin died earlier in the year of a drug overdose, while Chamberlin was fired by the band for heroin possession.
1996 – Just 12 hours after the debut of his single “Ain’t Got Nothin’ On Us,” John Michael Montgomery and wife Crystal welcome new baby Madison Caroline Montgomery into the world. Born in a Lexington, Ky., hospital at 4:11 a.m., the baby weighs 8 pounds, 7 ounces and measures 19 1/4 inches in length. Madison’s middle name honors both her grandmothers, each named Carol.
1990 – Grammy-winning blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, 35, is killed when a helicopter crashes into a hill in East Troy, Wis. The helicopter is returning the performer from a concert with Eric Clapton and Robert Cray. Three members of Clapton’s entourage are also killed.
1987 – No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “La Bamba,” Los Lobos. Ritchie Valens hit No. 22 with the song in 1959 just one day before he died in the same plane crash that killed Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper. The Los Lobos version of “La Bamba” was recorded for the film of the same name.
1975 – No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “Get Down Tonight,” KC and the Sunshine Band.
1967 – The Beatles manager Brian Epstein dies of an accidental drug overdose.
1965 – The Beatles take a break from a U.S. tour to spend a private evening with Elvis Presley at his Bel Air, Calif., home.
