2006 – During its second annual benefit concert at the Music Box/Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood, the MusiCares MAP Fund, a non-profit organization aimed at helping music industry professionals with addiction recovery treatment, present Metallica’s James Hetfield with the Stevie Ray Vaughan Award for his “devotion to helping other addicts with the recovery process.”
2002 – Singer Dionne Warwick is arrested when baggage screeners at Miami International Airport claim to find 11 suspected marijuana cigarettes inside her lipstick container. Warwick, 61, of Miami Beach, is charged with possession of less than 5 grams of marijuana. She signs an affidavit promising to appear in court and is released.
2001 – Darryl Worley marries longtime girlfriend Beverly Dean Irvin on the steps of the courthouse in Worley’s hometown of Savannah, Tenn.
2001 – Perry Como dies at his home in Florida. He is 87. The legendary crooner dies in his sleep after a long illness. He charts 82 pop hits through 1952, and counts among his 11 No. 1 songs “Catch a Falling Star,” which received the RIAA’s first-ever gold record.
1999 – George Jones pleads guilty in Franklin, Tenn., to driving while impaired and violating the state’s open-container law, in charges stemming from his near-fatal March 6 car accident. Jones, who gets to keep his driver’s license, is fined $550.
1971 – Mick Jagger and Bianca Perez-Mora marry in St. Tropez, France.
1967 – Archie Bell of the Drells is drafted into the military for a tour of Vietnam.
1964 – Ray Charles’ “Busted” wins a Grammy as Best R&B Recording.
1963 – Bob Dylan is invited to appear on TV’s “Ed Sullivan Show,” but refuses when he is forbidden to sing “Talking John Birch Society Blues.”
1948 – Steve Winwood is born in Birmingham, England. He is the lead singer of the bands the Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith and Traffic. He establishes a successful solo career in the 1980s and has two No. 1 singles: “Higher Love” and “Roll with It.”
1942 – Singer/songwriter Billy Swan is born in Cape Giradeau, Mo. His biggest hit is the 1978 No. 1 hit “I Can Help.”
