1999 – Don Henley sues Paramount Pictures Corp., alleging the studio reneged on a deal to feature a song, “Taking You Home,” he penned expressly for the hit film “Double Jeopardy.”

1995 – Natalie Merchant, one-time lead singer for 10,000 Maniacs becomes the first guest in a series of live chats on the Elektra Entertainment Group’s World Wide Web site. Merchant says she won’t make a habit of chatting on-line since it would hurt her eyes and make her feel lonely when the machine was off.

1962 – No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “The Loco-Motion,” Little Eva. Eva Boyd was a baby-sitter for songwriters Gerry Goffin and Carole King when they asked her to record the song as a demo. Grand Funk hits No. 1 with a 1974 remake and Kylie Minogue reaches No. 3 with a 1988 remake.
1962 – John Lennon marries Cynthia Powell. Paul McCartney is best man. The couple divorces on Nov. 8, 1968.
1960 – Oscar Hammerstein II dies of stomach cancer at the age of 65.
1956 – No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “Don’t Be Cruel/Hound Dog,” Elvis Presley. Presley causes an uproar with his pelvic undulations when he first performs “Hound Dog” on Milton Berle’s TV show. The two-sided hit tops Billboard’s single chart for 11 weeks, setting a record for the rock era that stands until 1992. A version of “Don’t Be Cruel” by Bill Black’s Combo reaches No. 11 in 1960 and a remake by Cheap Trick hits No. 4 in 1988.
1949 – Rick Springfield (Richard Springthorpe) is born in Sydney, Australia. His biggest hit is the million-selling No. 1 single “Jessie’s Girl” in 1981. He wins a Grammy for the song as Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
1947 – Keith Moon of the Who is born in Wembley, England. He dies on Sept. 7, 1978 at age 32, from an overdose of the sedative Heminevrin.
