1998 – Swedish producer Denniz Pop dies in Stockholm of cancer. He is 35. Pop, whose real name was Dag Volle, worked with Ace of Base, Dr. Alban, Robyn, Backstreet Boys, and Michael Jackson, among others.
1997 – Diana, Princess of Wales, dies. Her death is felt in various corners of the U.K. music business. Scottish act Wet Wet Wet and Primal Scream postpone U.K. shows. U2 pays tribute to the Princess before their Sept. 2 show in Edinburgh, Scotland. Michael Jackson dedicates his Sept. 3 HIStory concert in Ostend, Belgium, to Diana’s memory.
1995 – James Taylor is joined by his former wife, Carly Simon, at “Livestock ’95,” a benefit performance for the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society. It’s the first time the once-wed singers have performed on the same stage in 16 years.
1995 – Sterling Morrison, a founding member of the Velvet Underground, dies at his home in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., after a lengthy battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He was 53.
1992 – “American Pie” singer Don McLean and his wife, Patrisha, have their second child, a daughter. Wyatt McLean is born near the couple’s estate in Camden, Maine.
1991 – Jan Berry of the ’60s surfing tunes duo Jan & Dean marries ex-waitress Gertie Filip in Las Vegas, Nev. The marriage takes place onstage during a Jan & Dean performance.
1991 – Country music singer Dottie West is critically injured in a car accident while en route to perform at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tenn. She dies five days later.
1980 – Cher makes an unannounced appearance as vocalist with Black Rose at a concert in New York’s Central Park.
1970 – The Isle of Wight Pop Festival is held in England, and features Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, the Who, Joni Mitchell, Jethro Tull, Free, the Moody Blues, and others.
1965 – No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “Help!” The Beatles. The song is released in the U.S. two weeks before the film “Help!” opens in New York.
1961 – No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “Michael,” the Highwaymen. The five members were all freshmen from the same fraternity at Wesleyan University at Middletown, Conn. The song debuts at No. 100 on the Hot 100.
