2005 – Brian Wilson issues a desperate plea for any information on the whereabouts of Markus Sandlund, a cellist from the Stockholm Strings & Horns who played on his recently released recreation of the lost Beach Boys album “SMiLE.” Sandlund had been vacationing in Thailand when the area was battered by a tsunami following a Dec. 26 earthquake in the Indian Ocean.
2000 – Spice Girl Melanie “Mel G.” Gulzar splits with her husband of 15 months. In a statement, the singer says she intends to “remain good friends” with husband Jimmy Gulzar, whom she met on the Spice Girls’ 1998 tour.
2000 – Carlos Santana’s remarkable 1999 comeback receives further validation when the veteran Latin rocker is nominated for 10 Grammy Awards, including album of the year for his Arista set “Supernatural.”
1999 – Ol’ Dirty Bastard, the Wu-Tang Clan rapper whose real name is Russell Tyrone Jones, pleads not guilty at his arraignment on three felony counts of terrorist threats stemming from a Sept. 16 battle with bouncers at the House of Blues in West Hollywood.
1998 – Balladeer John Gary dies in Richardson, Texas, following a long battle with cancer. He is 65. Gary’s biggest hit was the album “The Nearness Of You,” which reached No. 11 in 1965.
1979 – No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “Too Much Heaven,” Bee Gees. The group donates all proceeds from sales of the single to UNICEF, the United Nations agency dedicated to helping the world’s children.
1967 – No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “I’m a Believer,” the Monkees. At seven weeks, this becomes the longest-running No. 1 song since the Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand.”.
