2001 – Jazz multi-reed player Norris Turney dies in Dayton, Ohio, from kidney disease. He is 79. Turney joined Duke Ellington’s Orchestra as its first flute player in 1969.
2000 – It’s a big night for country crossover into 2000 as Garth Brooks ropes three wins and no-show Shania Twain claims two at the 27th annual American Music Awards at the Shrine Auditorium.
1999 – Flame-haired songstress Cyndi Lauper lends her voice and likeness to “The Simpsons.”
1998 – Blues singer/guitarist David “Junior” Kimbrough dies in Holly Springs, Miss., after suffering a stroke. He is 67.
1996 – In a ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhattan, N.Y., Pink Floyd are officially inducted into the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame.
1996 – Drummer and singer Robert Covington dies at the age of 55.
