1999 – Jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd dies of cancer. He is 74. Byrd was instrumental in introducing Latin sounds, particularly the samba and bossa nova, to American audiences in the ’60s.
1999 – An early collection of Shania Twain’s work – recorded when she was still billing herself Eilleen Shania Twain – is released by Jomato Records. The set, “Beginnings (1989-90),” predates the artist’s earliest Nashville Demos.
1998 – The star-studded album “Across the Bridge of Hope” is released in Britain to raise money for victims of the Aug. 15 bombing in Northern Ireland. The album features songs by U2, Boyzone, Sinead O’Connor and Van Morrison as well as actor Liam Neeson reading a poem written by 12-year-old Shaun McLaughlin, who was killed in the attack.
1998 – Personal manager Inga Vainshtein files suit against singer-songwriter Jewel for wrongful termination of her contract, among other things. The suit alleges the singer acted in bad faith and without cause. The suit also claims that Lenedra Carroll, Jewel’s mother and current manager, intentionally induced Jewel to terminate the contract so that she could earn the commissions herself.
1996 – Herbert Khaury, otherwise known as Tiny Tim of “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” fame, dies of cardiac arrest at the age of 64.
1996 – Country crooner Mark Wills marries Kelly Mangus outside Atlanta.
1994 – Rapper and actor Tupac Shakur is shot five times during a robbery outside a New York recording studio. Two days later a jury finds him guilty of sexually abusing a woman, but acquits him of more serious sex and weapons charges.
1986 – No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “The Next Time I Fall,” Peter Cetera with Amy Grant. The single is the second No. 1 hit in a row for Cetera, a former member of Chicago.
