2003 – Scottish fiddler Johnny Cunningham dies of a heart attack in New York. He is 46. Cunningham had just finished a U.S. tour with Irish vocalist Susan McKeown. Cunningham was a founding member of the Celtic groups Silly Wizard, Relativity, Nightnoise and the Celtic Fiddle Festival.
2001 – R&B entertainer Rufus Thomas dies in a Memphis hospital after a short illness. He is 84.
1999 – Country singer Bryan White and Grand Ole Opry member Bill Anderson visit Hospital Hospitality House in Nashville to raise awareness and support for the facility. HHH provides lodging for families of seriously ill hospital patients and for outpatients receiving medical treatment.
1999 – Garth Brooks says on TNN’s “Crook & Chase” show that he plans to keep an “extremely low” profile in 2000 and then will “probably” announce his retirement at the end of the year, hinting that he would mark the occasion with a “big event.”
1998 – Andrew Lloyd Webber is acquitted on charges that he plagiarized a liturgical composer’s 20-year-old song to write the theme from his 1988 global smash “The Phantom Of The Opera.”
1997 – The surviving members of Australian rock act INXS release a tape of an interview in which they talk about the life and death of the group’s late vocalist Michael Hutchence. The band members had been reluctant to give interviews up to this point.
1992 – “Incesticide,” a collection of b-sides and rarities from Nirvana, is released. It goes gold the following spring.
1988 – James Brown is sentenced to six years in prison after leading police on an interstate car chase. He is released on Feb. 27, 1991.
