Hoping to follow in the success of his last effort, 2007’s “The Evolution Of Robin Thicke,” the R&B singer/songwriter will release his third album, “Something Else,” on Sept. 9 via Star Trak/Interscope.
Originally set to be released today (July 1), the delayed album was produced entirely by Thicke and long-time collaborator Pro-Jay. And unlike “Evolution,” “Something Else” features no guest appearances. The album, as Thicke describes it, is a cross between “classic Philly Motown and ‘70s black disco meets the creativity of the Beatles and Bob Dylan.”
“I felt like a lot of stuff out there sounded the same. Plus, there are a lot of things going on in the world with the recession and the war. It made me feel like everybody really just needed something new, something else,” Thicke told Billboard.biz about the album. “It’s time for a change and there is hope for everyone.”
The album’s first single “Magic” is currently No. 32 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and is featured in Samsung mobile phone TV spots in Europe.
In addition, although details were limited, Thicke revealed he has been involved in movie scoring, writing a novel and a screenplay, and is just wrapping up his first poetry book. As far as when any of these projects will see the day of light, Thicke says “they’ll end up there. I have to enjoy and feel like I made something that deserves to be noticed. Otherwise, I don’t rush my products for accolades.”
“The Evolution Of Robin Thicke” has sold 1.5 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
