“It’s the kind of record you put on when your man is coming over, when you’re with your girls,” Solange tells V Magazine. “There are songs that make you wanna dance because we were kind of partying our way through the record, but it’s very chill.”
The singer worked with Pharrell Wiliams, Vincent Vendetta of the Midnight Juggernauts, Ariel Reichstadt and Houston Texas native such as Solange, Devonté “Dev” Hynes. “Dev was a complete surprise, his role changed substantially throughout the process,” Solange says of the singer-songwriter who’s written for Florence and the Machine, the Chemical Brothers and more. “It’s very rare that you work with someone with whom you have this creative chemistry, it’s almost like a relationship. You have a sort of musical love affair.”
Solange continued to talk of the soundscapes that lace the album, meshing old and new, “My references for the record were all Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, not just their typical Janet [Jackson] and Prince stuff, but SOS Band and their b-sides with Chaka Khan. At first the songs were really dark because I had a premonition before the record that I was going to die. I was having panic attacks and wiling out.”
Aside from writing, recording and releasing an album all on her own, Solange recently signed a modeling contract with Next Model Management. “Artistic expression is invaluable to me in all walks of my career and I am so excited to continue to develop this path along with such an amazing team at Next Model Management,” Solange told Vogue UK, “I feel right at home working with people who have worked beside such creative forces in the world.”
Solange recently became an auntie, when her sister, Beyoncé, gave birth to hers and Jay-Z‘s daughter, Blue Ivy. “In love. SO THIS is what Aunty-hood feels like,” Solange tweeted days after the baby’s birth.
