The Who frontman Roger Daltrey recently revealed that he had a cancer scare and underwent surgery in Dec. 2009 to successfully remove a precancerous growth on a vocal chord, so it comes as no surprise that fundraising for cancer charities is a cause near and dear to his heart. He showed that last night (Jan. 13) at the Who’s first show in nearly a year.

Taking the stage at London Hammersmith’s Apollo, the Who — along with legendary guitarist Jeff Beck, Blondie singer Debbie Harry and “Summer of ’69” rocker Bryan Adams — used the performance to raise money for the British charity Killing Cancer. In addition to individual sets spanning their hits, Beck, Harry and Adams joined the Who onstage to perform the band’s 1972 hit “Join Together” during the show’s finale.

The Who has no tour dates scheduled right now, but Daltrey mentioned in Sept. 2010 that the band is considering various tour ideas involving its extensive back catalog. “I would like to be on the road playing as many different kind of shows as we could: maybe doing ‘Quadrophenia’ one night, do greatest hits the next night…” he said via an audio interview posted on the band’s site.
As for Daltrey’s cancer scare, he revealed to CBS Los Angeles last month that he became aware of the precancerous growth on his throat just six weeks before the Who was slated to perform at the 2010 Super Bowl. “Suddenly my voice wasn’t behaving in the normal way. It was becoming hard work to sing,” he said.
