The Weakerthans are calling it a day.
The indie folk-rock band, which formed in Winnipeg in 1997, has been anything but prolific of late. The group’s fourth and most recent studio album, the Polaris Music Prize-nominated Reunion Tour, dropped back in 2007 (Live at the Burton Cummings Theatre was released in 2010) and there hasn’t been a new post on the band’s Facebook page since February 2014.
If the writing was on the wall, drummer Jason Tait has spelled it right out with a tweet: “Word is getting out that The Weakerthans are done. Here’s the song we used to take the stage to for years. Bye bye.” The song, which he linked to the tweet, is John Coltrane’s “Abide With Me.”
