The claws came out on Tuesday night’s (Oct. 1) episode of The Voice, all in the surprising hands of shy-guy songwriter, James Violet.
The 20-year-old Utah native caught the attention of Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton with his honeyed rendition of Harry Styles’ romantic “Sweet Creature.” The three judges lined up for their pitch to get Violet on their team, and Clarkson weighed in that she was the only one who recognized the song he chose to perform.
“That doesn’t mean that she’s a good coach ’cause she knows a song,” Stefani snapped, before quickly taking it back. Clarkson egged her on and the two dived into a playful fight, complete with a “hold my hoops” moment, in which the “Since U Been Gone” songstress jokingly announced she was taking off her earrings.
After the pretend beef and the subsequent nervous laughter from the contestant, Stefani asked “Am I blowing it?” Clearly not, as Violet ended up picking the “Sweet Escape” singer as his coach. Watch the full audition below.
