It’s no secret that over the course of 29 years on the air, The Simpsons have made some crazy and almost eerily accurate predictions. The show predicted in 1998 that Disney would buy out Twentieth Century Fox and even foretold a Donald Trump presidency almost 20 years before he took office.
The show’s latest prediction that has been buzzing online is this year’s World Cup.
In a 1997 episode titled “The Cartridge Family,” soccer fever comes to Springfield, and as a commercial for a game mentions, it’ll be a matchup to determine which country is the greatest on Earth: Mexico or Portugal.
While there isn’t a direct mention of the match being a World Cup game, it is highly likely that Portugal and Mexico, both teams with a great record and dominant presence in FIFA, could go head-to-head in the final game.
However, it will take some time, skill and a bit of luck for that to even work out. The match is definitely possible, especially with Portugal’s 1-1 draw with Iran on Monday (June 25), allowing the team to move on to the round of 16. Mexico, on the other hand, needs to get its act together to even have a chance to play Portugal at all. After Wednesday’s (June 27) loss to Sweden 0-3, the Mexican team almost lost the opportunity to advance had it not been for South Korea scoring on Germany twice late in their game, eliminating last year’s champs and allowing Mexico to pass on to the round of 16 as the group’s runner-up.
