Melanie Vammen, her bandmate in the Muffs and the more recently formed Coolies, confirmed the news, reposting the Instagram announcement from Shattuck’s husband Kevin Sutherland on Facebook. He noted that “the love of my life Kim passed peacefully in her sleep.”
“I am the man I am today because of her,” he continued. “She will live with all of us through her music, our shared memories and in her fierce creative spirit. I love you always my Kimmy. Thank you for sharing your life with me.”
Shattuck’s Coolies alongside Vammen and Palmyra Delran was formed just this year, and they released their debut EP in July with all profits going to support the ALS Association Golden West Chapter (with Shattuck not mentioning that she suffered from the disease herself). The Muffs’ first album in five years, No Holiday, is scheduled for release Oct. 18 via Omnivore Recordings.
