Like leather jackets, LBDs and the perfect pair of jeans, hoop earrings are a classic fashion staple that has transcended time. The jewelry actually dates back to ancient Sumerian, Egyptian, Roman and Greek eras and was also a symbol for pirates and sailors, who wore them to mark their travels. Hoops have since become contemporary classics, especially for music artists in search of a high-impact, face-framing look, as Dolly Parton and Diana Ross did in the 1970s. This spring, hoops have made a comeback, most notably on stars like Jennifer Lopez, Solange Knowles and Alicia Keys, who have all been spotted wearing Jennifer Fisher’s versions of the earrings, which the designer updated for this season in thick gold and a few different shapes, like squares and ovals. The New York-based designer has had different versions of hoops in her collection since she launched her line in 2006, but this season it was singer Sade and model Adwoa Aboah that informed her inspiration. “(The pictures) hung on my inspiration wall for months,” says Fisher. “They were the inspiration for bringing back the hoops. Once we went bolder they took off!”
