“The Terror,” the Flaming Lips’ 13th studio album, will be released Apr. 2 through Warner Bros. Records, the band announced on Thursday (Jan. 24). Before that, however, fans will get to hear a new song, “Sun Blows Up Today,” as the music bed in a TV commercial set to make its debut during the Super Bowl on Feb. 3.

The Lips’ follow-up to last year’s “The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends” was produced by longtime collaborator David Fridmann and will include nine new songs on its standard edition. A press release describes the new disc as darker than previous works — and one that challenges listeners’ emotional thresholds.
“It’s going to be a great, very strange, beautiful, emotional record,” frontman Wayne Coyne told Billboard last June. “It’s music that was kind of happening by accident while we were making this ‘Heady Fwends’ record; in-between those (songs) we would secretly be making music we didn’t know we were making, and later we would hear these little pieces of music and be like, ‘What is that? That’s cool. Who is that?’ ‘It’s us.’ ‘It’s us?! Really?’ and we’d collect things and put them together.”
“Sun Blows Up Today” will be released to digital retailers on Jan. 29, the same date that pre-orders for “The Terror” begin. “Today” is a bonus track that will only be included on the digital album; an official single for the album has yet to be announced.
Earlier this month, the Black Keys announced a brief co-headlining trek with the Flaming Lips, which kicks off Apr. 28 in Kansas City. Additionally, the Lips will perform at Lollapalooza Brazil in Sao Paulo on Mar. 29.
