The Doors and its founding member Ray Manzarek enter the Social 50 chart this week following the keyboardist’s death on May 20.
The Social 50 ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, Myspace and Instagram. The chart’s methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views, song plays and reactions.
Manzarek enters at No. 36, while the Doors bow at No. 49. The entry of both acts is due to a surge in traffic to their respective Wikipedia pages. The Doors Wikipedia page received more than 327,000 views during the week (up 523%), while Ray Manzarek’s page received over 622,000 (up from only 6,400 the week before). The Doors also add 62,000 new fans to their overall fanbase (up 127%) and caused a 239% increase in overall video views.
Elsewhere on the chart, Jennifer Lopez cracks the top five (6-3) for the first time in the 117 weeks she’s resided on the chart, due to the continuing success of her newest single with Pitbull “Live It Up.” The official Vevo video for the song — which debuted late in the week two charting periods ago on May 17 — accumulated 13 million streams this past week, contributing to the more than 17.2 million video plays. Her recent televised performance of the song at the Billboard Music Awards (May 19) received positive online buzz, leading to a 5% rise in conversation about her on Facebook and the addition of 209,000 fans on the platform (up 15% from the previous week).
Also benefitting from a TV performance is Shakira, who re-enters at No. 28 after singing a cover of the Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand By You” on the May 21 episode of NBC’s “The Voice,” where she’s a coach. She re-enters with the addition of 155,000 new overall fans and over 10 million views to her videos (up 3%).
Making a 22-16 jump on the tally is Maroon 5, which released the official Vevo music video for the track “Love Somebody.” The release caused online buzz, creating a 13% rise in overall conversation on the Facebook platform, which increased the band’s newsfeed imprint enough to help it gain 170,000 new fans on the platform. The official Vevo video helped contribute to the more than 16 million plays received by Maroon 5 during the week (up 72% from the previous).
Rounding out the rest of the top 10, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift remain at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, while Rihanna tumbles (3-4). Daft Punk holds at No. 5 after the duo rises into the top five last week, while Justin Timberlake ascends (7-6) along with Beyonce (8-7). Bruno Mars makes a jump into the top 10 (12-8) following his performance at the Billboard Music Awards, while things cool down for Demi Lovato as she tumbles (4-9). Pitbull slides one position to anchor the top 10 (9-10).
