U.K. alternative-rock veterans The Cure are to be honored on Feb. 25 as recipients of the 2009 Godlike Genius accolade at the Shockwaves NME Awards.
The announcement coincides with the release of the band’s thirteenth album, “4:13 Dream” (Suretone/Geffen), this week and the award presentation will also mark the thirtieth year since the release of their debut album, “Three Imaginary Boys” (Fiction).
As well as accepting the award at London’s Brixton Academy, the band will perform a 30-minute set that frontman Robert Smith says will include “some new stuff, some old stuff and some stuff from in between.”
“The [Godlike] Genius award is given to the band, and as a band we are honored,” said Smith in a statement. “I think it is a recognition of all the Cure has done over the years.”
Previous recipients of the magazine’s Godlike Genius award include Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath), New Order, The Clash and last year’s winners, Manic Street Preachers.
