We actually had a “Helloooo Cleveland!” moment pretty much as soon as we arrived in the city. Got dropped off at our hotel, which is designed counter-intuitively with room 285 located the basement and rooms in the100s upstairs. The hotel employee describing how to get to the room sounded almost identical to Bo Diddley giving backstage directions to Spinal Tap minus the “short jog” part. We don’t have time for either, except for Ethan, who never misses an opportunity to go workout. His body is totally “cut.” (He also wrote this last sentence.)
We played Detroit last night. Some of our best fans were pressed right up against the stage and helped us out with all the back-up vocals on “Radio on!” from “Top Down” (off our first CD) and the title track from “Pussycat.” Yeah, people in Detroit are in love with rock and roll just like in Boston. Jim Diamond, who produced our new CD, came down to see us and hang out, along with the Esperantos, who are on Red Car Records, the original Charms label. We even met some of Mitch Ryder’s Detroit Wheels, whose music is part of the Go-Go Dancers nightly repertoire.
The night before, we were in Chicago at the Double Door where we played great show to a big crowd and then got to meet Cynthia, the famous plaster-caster. She was one of the most interesting people we’ve met othe tour. I told her my theory about how male musicians generally hold on to their hair as they get older and she said I should get funding to do a more scientific study of the matter.
We’re now back on Eastern-Standard Time (aka “normal time” according to Whitney a Go Go) and after we rock Cleveland and Buffalo we have a day off and a homecoming show in Boston. Nothing beats swinging through town in the middle of a tour, looking forward to seeing our apartments and friends… and then travel ling back out of town on our cool bus.
