Mexican media giant Televisa is launching a U.S.-based production company, called called Televisa USA, to create English-language content for American television.
The venture follows in the footsteps of Pantelion Films, launched in 2010 by Lionsgate and Televisa to create movies targeting U.S. Hispanic viewers. Pantelion films include “Casa de mi Padre” (starring Will Ferrell) and “Girl In Progress” (Eva Mendes).
Televisa USA will be headed by Pantelion CEO Paul Presburger, along with creative chief Michael Garcia, who in a release spoke of content with “Latin fele, American appeal.”
Televisa USA will adapt Televisa formats to U.S. audiences and will also create original content. The studio’s first project is a co-production with ABC Studios titled “Devious Maids,” which is slated to air on Lifetime in 2013.
The company is also co-producing with Sony Pictures Television a series titled “Hollywood Heights” for Nickelodeon, inspired by Mexican series “Alcanzar Una Estrella.” Planned for an 80-episode run, airing five times per week, the series mimics the Mexican soap opera model.
“We saw an opportunity to bring to English language networks the ability to tell Televisa stories,” Presburger said in a statement.
