Earlier this month, Teen Top returned to bring their beloved brand of peppy electro-pop via their new Seoul Night album and title track single. As has come expected from the boy band that will celebraete eight years together this July, the guys deliver a high-octane single release paired with amped-up choreography to highlight the members’ skills.
Teaming up for a majority of the tracks with K-pop super-producer Brave Brothers (who worked on past Teen Top singles “Love Is,” “Miss Right” and the act’s breakout hit “Going Crazy”), Teen Top bring back a sound that feels inherently natural to the group while also getting to flex their creativity a bit more as the guys tell Billboard each member contributed in different ways to the album with leader/rapper C.A.P and the group’s youngest member and vocalist ChangJo writing and composing on the EP. From the grooving dance-pop feel on “SOS” to the slick, slightly melancholy synth-pop vibe in “Without You,” Teen Top’s Seoul Night deliver the youthful boy-band pop that they’re known for with tracks that explore deeper emotions and vibes.
Taking some time out to answer questions with Billboard, Teen Top discuss their latest release, suggestions if anyone wants to have a great night in Seoul, what future holds and more.
Teen Top is back with “Seoul Night,” their latest release produced with Brave Brothers. How are you feeling about the response so far?
Teen Top: We’re very glad to receive a lot of positive responses on “Seoul Night,” compared to our previous songs like “Love Is,” and are working hard to promote it. Many people seem to enjoy the songs because the overall vibe is very bright and exciting. Because we’ve worked on many songs with Brave Brothers, we know each other’s style and working process…all the members are having a great time thanks to our fans.
ChangJo and C.A.P, you two have a few songwriting contributions on this album. What was inspiring you for this latest release?
C.A.P: I participated writing my own rap, I usually rely heavily on my imagination.
ChangJo: I don’t usually write a song based on my personal experience, but rather set a big frame to write a story about it. For example, I decide on a title of the song first then work on the actual content.
Taking your new title track “Seoul Night” as inspiration, what are things someone must do in Seoul to have the best night ever?
C.A.P: Because I like Korean food, I would recommend Korean-style pancakes with a glass of makgeolli (Korean rice wine).
Chunji: I’d recommend Han River because I like quiet places.
Niel: Anywhere that has a great night view of Seoul.
Ricky: If you have a chance to visit Seoul, you should go to Itaewon! I went there recently and there a lot of fun things happening in each corner.
Changjo: I know a lot of people are visiting Gangnam, but I would recommend you visit Myeongdong because there are also many things to enjoy in that area.
In the “Seoul Night” MV, there were many scenic shots of the city. What are some of the must-see places or tourists attractions in Seoul?
C.A.P: Wherever the beauty of Korea is alive, but I’d also recommend anywhere you can have a traditional Korean experience.
Chunji, Niel, Changjo: Namsan Tower [N Seoul Tower] is a must and great place to take photos.
Ricky: Gyeongbokgung Palace! It’s a beautiful place to walk around.
You always has great choreography, but did you have any specific goals with “Seoul Night”?
Teen Top: We tried to make the choreography simpler than the previous songs because we want to make it easier for others to dance and have fun with it.
In July, Teen Top will have been together eight years and you’ve helped create and solidify TOP Media with new groups like 100% and Up10tion. In your opinions, what are the biggest changes between the K-pop scene then and now?
Teen Top: For the past few years, K-pop has become a global phenomenon that people all over the world love to listen. It seems like various genres and styles of K-pop are being attempted and loved by many people. We’re very proud to have new groups debut after us so that we can grow together. We’ll work harder to make the company better and stronger.
What else is coming in 2018? It’s been a moment since we’ve seen Teen Top in America, will you be returning anytime soon?
Teen Top: As a team, we’ll be having a concert soon in Seoul and are getting ready for another album as well. We’ll have a few solo activities — like Niel’s musical in August — but mostly focus on the group activities so please stay tuned! We’ve been to the U.S. for concerts in 2014 and 2016 — and we met Billboard in 2014! We miss our [American] fans, Angels, and hope to see them again soon. We’ll try to find an opportunity to meet them on stage real soon! But it’s been a while since we interviewed with Billboard and we’re very excited. “Seoul Night” is an album that all of us contributed and spent a lot of time on so we hope it reaches many listeners. We’re always doing our best to bring you good music and performance so please expect to see more of us in the future.
Ricky: [shouting] I love Billboard!!!
