HBO has released a teaser video for Dave Grohl’s new documentary series, revealing the title: “Foo Fighters Sonic Highways”.
“It all started with the idea of recording at different studios all over the country,” says Grohl the trailer voiceover, as video of various American cities and recording studios plays on. “Doing something to make it new. You can tie all of these people and places together with these sonic highways. This is a musical map of America.”
As Grohl revealed to Billboard in the magazine’s May 31 issue, the hourlong HBO series will follow the Foo Fighters through eight American cities rooted in music — Seattle, Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York and Washington, D.C. — where Grohl interviewed some of the musicians who helped shape those sounds, using each conversation as inspiration to write and record an original song for the band’s new album that’s due this fall.
Grohl’s show follows his 2013 documentary “Sound City” about the fabled former Los Angeles recording studio of the same name. Like “Sound City”, Grohl is directing the series. HBO has not announced a debut for ““Foo Fighters Sonic Highways” but sources told Billboard it would come out in November, around the time the band’s album is released.
“After making Sound City, I realized that the pairing of music and documentary works well because the stories give substance and depth to the song, which makes for a stronger emotional connection,” Grohl said. “So I thought, ‘I want to do this again, but instead of just walking into a studio and telling its story, I want to travel across America and tell its story.'”
