Taylor Swift has turned her break-up into a party.
The video for “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” is a quirky celebration that finds Swift singing and dancing with band members in animal costumes in between relationship flashbacks — all filmed in an elaborate long shot. Swift rocks big glasses and a pair of printed pajamas as she shrugs off her not-so-nice ex-boyfriend, a scruffy, seemingly older musician-type with a penchant for drama.
The track, the first single from Swift’s “Red,” has made a serious splash, selling 623,000 downloads in its first week and setting the digital record for a female artist. It moved another 307,000 units in its second week and has spent two weeks as the Billboard Hot 100’s No. 1.
When Swift first introduced “Never” in a YouTube webcast, she teased that it was written for “my lovely ex-boyfriend.” The title of her album, Swift told fans, was inspired by the many emotions she has felt in her relationships over the past two years. Although she wrote more than 30 songs for the new album, “Red” will have 16 tracks, including a duet with British musician Ed Sheeran.
