K-pop singer Taeyeon is ringing in the holiday season with a mellifluous new EP dedicated to all things Christmas.
This Christmas – Winter Is Coming was released on Tuesday (Dec. 12), and is the Girls’ Generation’s member’s first solo seasonally-themed album. Along with the single “This Christmas,” the EP contains six other original tracks plus an instrumental version of the titular track.
The somber title song and other evocative ballads on the EP were balanced by more upbeat tracks. The English-language carol “The Magic of Christmas Time,” the slowburn R&B of “Christmas Without You,” and the mid-tempo tune dedicated to Taeyeon’s fans “I’m All Ears” are paired with the groovy jazz of “Let It Snow,” the sweet sleigh bell-driven pop sound of “Candy Cane,” and the retro doo-wop vibe of “Shh.”
“This Christmas” was released with a touching music video featuring the singer as a daughter reflecting on her winter and Christmas memories of her father. It shows the pair throughout the years as Taeyeon watches on in retrospect from a passing car, thinking about how their relationship has changed. The clip ends with her greeting her father in the present in front of a Christmas tree.
The new album rounds out 2017 for Taeyeon with her latest of three singles released this year, with “This Christmas” serving as a follow up to February’s “Fine” and April’s “Make Me Love You.” This Christmas – Winter Is Coming is the artist’s third solo EP.
The EP is Taeyeon’s first solo yuletide album, but she previously also released the Dear Santa EP in 2015 as a member of Girls’ Generation unit group TTS; the album peaked at No. 4 on the World Albums chart. Other artists under her label, SM Entertainment, also frequently release Christmastime releases; EXO and NCT Dream both have new holiday-inspired music coming out later this month.
