Guitarist Daron Malakian has more than two dozen songs written for System Of A Down’s next album, according to a statement from the band. The eclectic rock act will begin rehearsals later this summer. The set will be co-produced by Malakian and Rick Rubin, who has been involved in that capacity on the band’s three previous releases for his Columbia-distributed American Recordings imprint.
The as-yet-unnamed set will be the band’s first since last year’s “Steal This Album!,” a collection of outtakes from seven years of recording sessions. Released in November, the set debuted at No. 15 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 835,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
The band’s last studio album, 2001’s “Toxicity,” debuted at No. 1 on the album chart. It has sold 3.1 million copies in the U.S.
Prior to recording, System Of A Down will make its only performance appearances of the year at the U.K.’s Reading and Leeds festivals. As previously reported, those events will be headlined by Metallica, Blur and Linkin Park, and feature an array of electronic and rock acts.
