Switchfoot, the Crabb Family and Casting Crowns were the big winners at the 36th annual Gospel Music Assn. Dove Awards, held last night (April 13) at Nashville’s Grand Ole OpryHouse.
Switchfoot was named artist of the year and won honors for rock contemporary song and shortform video for “Dare You to Move.” The Christian crossover band also netted the prize for longform music video for “Switchfoot Live In San Diego.” The band’s Columbia/Sparrow album “The Beautiful Letdown” has sold 2.3 million units, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
The Crabb Family also netted four awards: Southern Gospel recorded song for “He Came Looking for Me,” country recorded song for “Forever,” traditional gospel recorded song for “Through the Fire” featuring Donnie McClurkin and Southern gospel album for “Driven.”
Casting Crowns was named group of the year and won inspirational recorded song for “Voice of Truth” and song of the year for “Who Am I.” Frontman/principal songwriter Mark Hall won his second consecutive Dove for songwriter of the year. “For a writer and an artist, it’s a great encouragement. I’m so blessed that the little gift that I have gets to have an award show,” he told Billboard.biz.
Jeremy Camp won his second consecutive Dove in the male vocalist category and took home the Dove for rock recorded song for the hit “Stay.” Nicole C. Mullen was named female vocalist of the year, an honor she previously won in 2002. Mullen’s “Everyday People” netted the award for urban album of the year.
The awards are voted on by the members of the Gospel Music Assn. The show will air in syndication.
